If you are doing a color ad it is very important that you set the ad up for being printed on a printing press.

Most consumer programs are designed for creating files for the web or files to be printed on an inkjet or laser printer. These files do not work on a printing press.

There are 2 big issues that need to be addressed when preparing a color ad for newsprint.

1. All color should be "CMYK" color. Most programs default to "RGB" color because that is what a computer monitor uses and it is also what most inkjet printers use. If your program does not allow you to create a file in "CMYK" color, then you are better off letting us create the ad for you. Call us at 240-247-0393 if there are problems.

2. All black type should only contain 100% black ( the "K" on the ink color sliders) color. Programs like Microsoft Word and Adobe Elements create a "Rich Black" that is a combination of all 4 colors (C,M,Y and K). This works great on a computer screen or an inkjet printer, but it is a nightmare on a printing press where it is extremely difficult to keep all 4 color plates aligned for that level of precision. If your program does not have CMYK color choices that allow you to create a black type that can be adjusted to 100% K and 0% C,M & Y (see below), then send us the individual components of your ad and let us assemble it. Call us at 240-247-0393 if there are problems.

(NOTE: If your ad
does not contain any black type, we can usually convert your pdf file to CMYK color. If it does contain black type, we can not convert it.)

HOW TO MAKE BLACK TYPE FOR BLACK & WHITE OR
COLOR PRINT ADVERTISEMENTS IN SOME VERSIONS OF MICROSOFT WORD.
Same principle applies to other programs with CMYK color support.

1. Highlight the text

2. In the menu at the top choose:
FORMAT > FONT

3. Click and hold the "FONT COLOR" drop down menu

4. Click on "More Colors" at the bottom

5. Click and Hold the Sliders drop down menu and choose "CMYK Sliders".

6. Slide the C, M and Y Sliders all the way to the left for a value of 0 (zero).

7. Slide the K slider all the way to the right for a value of 100%.

Now you have created black type that a printing press can print!

Do this for all black type that you use in your ad.

This basic concept can be applied to all software programs. When creating black text, make sure there are no other colors in the mix except 100% black.
